What is Linux?
The operating system you have probably never heard of. Linux is a computer operating system invented by Linus Torvalds in 1991. It is special because the basic machine coding is designed to synchronise with the way modern microchips function.
In simple terms this means that processes work faster. Linus was at University at the time so it was a few years before he was able to fully refine his coding for commercial use. Meanwhile, Microsoft and soon after, Apple, were dominating the computer markets with less sophisticated code. This happens a lot. The best product is not always the one with market dominance.

Once purchased from us you own and can operate your system without corporate interference. However, you are certainly not limited to the applications provided. There are three sources of additional applications: the Linux repository; any programme or software application that offers Linux compatibility; or a PPA — a Personal Package Archive.
Though Linux Mint has a user interface similar to Microsoft Windows, the actual coding of the programmes and applications is distinct. Generally, Windows programmes will not run on Linux and vice versa. In order to run games written for Windows a virtual interface such as Steam or Wine must be downloaded and installed.
